From her manically amusing rants to some straight up advice including such gems as 1. the only mags you should keep on your coffee table are ones that have articles about you in them. And if there aren’t any, you’re not working hard enough. 2. be taller. AND IF YOU AREN’T; wear top hats, lifts, or just own it in a major way- without being an asshole though! cuz that just means you have a Napoleon complex and then the whole plan’s moot! 3. start using the word ‘Major’ to explain people, things, experiences, ideas, etc. But it should be pronounced ‘May-jah!’ 4. if a magazine says it, it’s TRUE!

If dream illustrators existed I’d happily delve into the sleepy, Miu Miu esq land created by illustrator du jour, Jennifer Pitchers. In Parma Violet Shades, her drawings evoke a Cute, Care Bear Kinda Charm that are hard not to fall in love with/ want to wear. And soon you will be able to because Jennifer has just designed a range of bespoke textile patterns for the recently featured fashion designer Coco Fennell. Flash Trash caught up with Jennifer to find out what’s going on in her illustrated world..

Working on: New Issue of ‘Paper & Krook’, a literary magazine I publish for aspiring writers and book lovers.

Astali is the name on New York style hunter’s lips right now, and by the laid-back cool attitude of woman behind the brand, Shannon De Jong you can see why. With an eclectic, urban mix of materials including feathers, bullet casings, teeth, guitar strings and vintage trinkets her jewellery is a lustworthy adornment that’s got downtown hip written all over it..Flash Trash caught up with Ms De Jong to talk New York Hideaways, Chinchillas and music..

What first inspired you to become a jewelry designer, Shannon? Were you always an artist, and how did you learn how to do what you do?

I’ve been recycling everyday items into jewelry for as long as I can remember – since childhood. I think I was always creative, but I didn’t study design academically.  I worked for several other established jewelry designers, learning the in’s and out’s, before launching my own venture full-time.

ASTALI is very androgynous jewelry – many pieces are worn by men and women alike.  They come from all backgrounds and walks of life – anyone with a non-traditional approach to their accessories.  ASTALI customers want something that’s not readily available to everyone else.  They often become sentimentally attached to their jewelry, especially when it was received as a gift.  It makes me proud to be part of that bond.

I’m most inspired by flea markets, natural history, and tribal jewelry.  I come from a family of collectors, so I’ve always decorated my home with flea market finds rather than new, store-bought stuff.  I think my jewelry is an extension of that mindset.  I guess I have my dad to thank for that!

You’re based in New York what’s your secret hideaway there?

Hmm, I like spending time on my rooftop, it has a great view.  But my real hideaway is California.  I’m a California Girl at heart, and travel there as often as I can, when I need to get out of the “city”.  I’ve had this old poster, for as long as I can remember – it’s an ad for the Union Pacific railroad and it says “California Calls You.”  It does!

Rebecca Finch and I met on a shoot for Tatler a few years ago, where deep in the Norfolk countryside we munched on m&m’s and watched teen movies in a room that was really a shrine to Dr Who.  A regular on the London Model Scene, Beccy has shot for Dazed & Confused, starred in a King Charles music video and neaaaaarly got a big part in Alice in Wonderland but looked a little too much like Anne Hathaway which is a shame. But Beccy’s got bigger and better things lined up and is now far too busy to be plunging down rabbit holes…Flash Trash found out what she’s up too..

Wanting? A yellow, floor-length Tom Ford dress I tried on at a casting (never going to happen!)

Watching? Shred 4 in 3D, seen it twice already and love it.

Reading? Twilight!! But i’ve just finished reading Romeo and Juliet so that makes up for it..

Waiting for? My holiday to Gran Canaria.

Funny modeling story? Whilst doing a shoot for Dazed and Confused, i was posing outside a Church with a top and short skirt, i was then asked to drop the skirt so i was then posing with a skirt around my ankles (in winter) when lots of people came out from a Church service giving very disapproving looks!!
Favorite shoot? The three Tatler shoots i’ve done, they always have incredible sets with really expensive designer dresses to wear, and always the same lovely team of people working on them as well.
Favourite piece of jewellery on Flash Trash? I adore the Ruby Slippers Necklace (£15 from Lunarra Star) as i love the Wizard of Oz!
